Certified Medical Interpreters Program

The Medical Interpreter Certificate program is a unique and exciting new program that is not offered anywhere in Ontario and all of Canada. One we can truly call our own.  SLAAMB, in partnership with the Sioux Lookout Menoyawin Health Centre and Confederation College, delivers the program on site at the SLAAMB classrooms in Sioux Lookout.

The program commenced on Feb. 22, 2010 with an end date of Feb. 25, 2011. There are currently 19 students enrolled, 2 Cree, 6 Ojibway, and 11 Oji-Cree. They represent the communities of Northwestern Ontario within the NAN territory. The students are learning medical terminology in conjunction with the Lexicon (a native language dictionary) that is being developed by the Sioux Lookout Menoyawin Health Centre. Other courses include Math, Communications (English), Computers, Health Care Services, Interprofessional Team Practice, Language Interpreter I and II with a Language Lab (in all 3 languages), Health and Safety Lab, and Field Placement Preparation. Each of the 3 semesters will end with a field placement practicum.

The students will graduate with a College Certified Medical Interpreter Certificate upon completion.
